LT Tires

Tire Day did not happen as planned. In fact, several times it didn’t happen as planned. 3/4 ton trucks can’t manage on P-rated tires, and three different times, three different shops ordered the wrong tires, even after I checked that they had the models, sizes, and ratings I was looking for.

I took some domestic heat for doing things the hard way by not blindly walking into a shop and letting someone sell me something. Thing is, these very folks are the ones who ordered the wrong ratings, so the outcome likely would have been no different.

What I wound up doing was finding exactly the tires I wanted and ordering them online, then having them installed locally. I got exactly the right tire. Did not get the Coopers, but another Consumer Reports top-rated model for my truck type – Falken Wildpeak H/T. Not only good for all weather, highway, and some terrain, but good for snow and ice as well, which matters here.

When she’s hauling all the time, I may opt later for some heavier ply tires.

One thing I learned, no matter how many times people will tell you to look for the presence or absence of a P in front of the size to see if a tire is P-rated or not, disbelieve the absence. Specifically stick LT in front of the size and search for that.
