Compile Compile Compile

It's taking a bit more effort to get Gaim installed on Killjoy than it was on Eddie. Looks like the most recent version of Gaim depends on more updated other stuff, glib and pkg-config to be specific, that I am first having to compile and all that.

Yackety-shmackety.

Killjoy is about 50% the same Killjoy that Napalm used to have, when it was a Windows box. The machine Matthias, also a Windows box, and it were both experiencing some hardware/OS/psychological issues, so they got melded into one creature with all the known bad hardware tossed out. While I was busy thinking of a good new name that reflects the thing's background, Napalm renamed it Killjoy, and, frankly, it has since lived up to the name. It's been a source of intense frustration, from the very first moment when it transpired that the floppy drive had gone out.

Killjoy still performed poorly with Windows 98SE, so now he runs RedHat 7.0. I've been grousing a lot about the enormous hassle this whole thing is, moving my Windows box upstairs for the children and starting all over with Killjoy and RedHat, but it's not really that bad. What puts me in a sour mood is that doing so is an investment of time, and time is what I don't have much of these days. I am quite happy and content compiling and installing, right now, on a Friday night, my night off. But I go an entire week with barely time to shower, much less try to sniff out dependencies. And then the weekend comes and it's all about taking care of the family. It's rare for me to get a chunk of time such as I am having right now.

When I am better off than this financially, the first thing I'm getting is a Mac. I gotta see if there's anything to it. God I get so tired of fighting machines. I get tired of fighting *nix boxes to get them started, and I get tired of fighting Windoze boxes to keep them running. I get tired of fighting software battles. All hardware sucks. All software sucks.

I konw. I have to relax. Sigh. I really do generally like machines and figuring them out. It's the timing. This is really a messy time.

I am officially tired of my hair now. The mohawk was fun, but it is high maintenance, and if I wasn't all into the curling iron and hairspray thing before, I sure as hell don't feel up to goop and glue now.
