Tips For The Webly Wise #472

Anytime you have anyone taking care of anything on your behalf, let them know how to reach you. You don't leave a kid at the sitter without an emergency phone number. You don't leave your car with a mechanic without some way to contact you. Likewise, when you have internet services such as web hosting, it is extremely important to keep your contact information up to date.

Especially your email address.

On the internet, your email address is the equivalent of what your phone number is in the physical world. Any official notification of anything important is going to come to your email address. No one is going to phone you.

Do not leave your website and email service in the hands of someone who is left with a stale old rotting corpse of an official email address for you, which you have not checked since the golden age of BBS, and which was using a server that is now home to an extended family of fire ants in Mount Trashmore. Keep your email address up to date.

If you don't, don't you dare come crying to me, or I will spank your ass. And not in the nice way, either.
