On Patriotism
I read this wonderful piece that Wlofie did, and it reminded me of another article I had read one time. I've been trying to find it via Google tonight, but so far, no luck. It was all about two types of patriots - the "God Bless America" patriots and the "This Land Is Your Land" patriots. One kind is about blind, glowing acceptance, a wholeheartedly uncritical support, one that stamps out dissent. The other is about a deep, tough love that has the courage to stand up to improve our country and correct ourselves when we go astray, one that welcomes dissent.
Can you guess what kind of patriot I am?
In looking for this article, I'm finding lots of other interesting stuff. Here are a few items:
"Patriotism" by David E. Ross
I approach patriotism the same way I practice my religion, not with public displays of symbols — waving the flag or singing "God Bless America" — but by living my life as an example.
"Whose Land Is It, Anway? - Reflections on Patriotism" by Sam Smith
At a moment calling for the most rational vision and thought, our leaders - from the White House to CNN - have instead chosen to turn this tragedy into a Super Bowl of national affairs in which our only assignment as Americans is to choose the right team and cheer it on.
"I am a patriot says local American student" by Katy June-Friesen
I believe patriotism has many colors besides red, white and blue. I believe patriotism is working for the good of my personal and local community for the good of the nation. I believe patriotism is exercising my right to vote and using my freedom of speech to let my leaders know I don’t agree with government policy.
Now, to go with our politics, here's a little commentary on religion.
