It's a very bad idea to go driving late at night around here with your windows
down. You are very likely to get hit in the face by a lawn sprinkler.
Me, I don't mind. Washes off my glasses. I think Napalm objects to my getting
the leather interior all wet, though.
I didn't realize until tonight that the .us top level domain was available for
regular folks to obtain now. I had a customer who had an account all set up for
one of these, but hadn't actually registered it yet, and I was starting to fret
that they'd gone and done something foolish. But lo, NegiYo's registrar partner
deals in .us domains, and apparently so do all the others as well. Wow.
Dunno if I mentioned it before, but Wlofie's server is now online 24/7, thanks
to the magic of DSL. It was looking for a long time as though DSL would never
be available in that region because of the local telco's stranglehold on the
very market they were trying to bury, but someone must have amassed some
leverage because kaboom! it was there. It did not take him long to obtain
service either. The thing that makes us in the US shake our heads is that it's
costing him, on the span of a year, about the same to have DSL as it was to have
56k dialup. Sure the installation fee was a lot steeper, and the monthly
charges greater, but when you compare that against the telephone charges he was
racking up (no such thing as a local free call, folks), in the medium range it
begins to look like break-even. In the long range it looks like actually saving
money.
He's also done away with a good portion of the password protection, too. I
didn't think it was very conducive to sharing information and making visitors
feel welcome, and he either concurred or went along - it's hard to tell.
His site's a little thick in techie stuff, but I know some folks who will enjoy
that just fine. His journal is pretty opinionated and cynical, but I know
folks who will enjoy that too. I do.
