I did nothing productive at all this weekend. Yesterday I had a to do list that wound up completely ignored as I played with the computer, watched TV, felt feverish, and coddled my aching ankle. It has to be looked at soon, the ankle.

Today I did at least get one item on the list done. "Go to movie." In fact, I did it twice.

Lost Souls is about this chick whose mission in life is to assist priests in exorcisms. It becomes known during a botched exorcism, one that results in the severe mental/spiritual injury of the main priest, that Satan is coming, in the form of the possession of an unbeliever. She's got to figure out who it is, convince the guy, and then decide what to do about it.

I guess it was scary. I spent a good deal of the movie wondering what exactly it is that is frightening people. Maybe if I were raised Catholic it might make more sense to me, but this is why I chose the movie, now isn't it?

I don't like horror movies, mostly because these days they involve things that could actually happen, generally psycho killers going after innocent, beautiful women. Not that I am innocent or beautiful, but in the dark I could get mistaken for one or both. Serious dark.

But since I don't believe in demons, or Satan even, there's not a whole lot of credibility to the movie for me. And that seemed like a good reason to try it out. See if I could take it.

And I could.

After that I saw The Contender. It was at once more boring and more interesting than I thought it would be, slow to start but gettng a good momentum eventually. I was prepared to be disappointed by the protagonist, but she really did come across as the kind of politician I'd love to grow up to be. Well, except for a couple of stances on an issue or two. It's about this senator who has been named as the President's choice to take over the VP position, since the former occupant died. The choice has to be approved by Congress, and the movie covers the various investigations and machinations conducted by the forces both promoting and opposing her.

Movies like this often make me wonder what kinds of chances I would stand in politics. I have squat in the form of $$$, and that alone pretty much kicks me out of the running, but if it weren't for that, what would stand in my way? My own self doubt? My current financial distress? My wild life in college and the Army? Hmmm.

There seem to be two tracks to the Presidency. (If I even wanted the Presidency.) You can be a governor first, or come from Congress. Has anyone in modern times come to the office from any other direction? I'll have to look that up.
